ECONOMIC IMPACT
  • The Port of Mobile generates $25.1 billion in economic value and

  • Supports over 153,000 direct and indirect jobs in Alabama.

The Mobile Harbor navigation project provides access to both public and private terminals at the , currently ranked 11th largest U.S. seaport by total volume (2017). The Port has an annual economic value of $25.1 billion, supporting over 153,000 direct and indirect jobs in Alabama alone. The types of cargo handled by the port are heavy lift &and oversized cargo, containers, automotive components, coal, petroleum, petroleum products, aluminum, iron, steel, copper, pulp, paper, lumber, consumer goods, cement, agricultural products, and chemicals. Deepening the channel will allow the port to fully load Post-Panamax and Aframax ships calling the port, increase vessel transit efficiencies and improve safety for Post-Panamax, Aframax, and wide body ships currently calling the port; and generate capacity driven economies of scale for U.S. shippers utilizing the port. This project, among other improvements the port is undergoing, will keep the port competitive and improve performance for years to come.

The Mobile Harbor Navigation Channel General Reevaluation Report (GRR) completed in May 2019 recommending the project be deepened and widened, consistent with the new Panama Canal locks. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has determined that the harbor deepening and widening will have a benefit-to-cost ratio of 3.1 to 1, returning over $3 in national economic benefits for each dollar invested. This investment is critically important for the nation’s continued economic growth.
